The small round catch that fixates the lowest part of the steer shaft doesn't quite reach to the hole it's supposed to fit in. Apparently the shaft has moved a little bit, but I can't get it to move back. What would be the optimal procedure to restore the shaft in its original position?

Looks like you need to (re)compress the steering column. Perhaps the clip that keeps the headset in place is not tight enough; or maybe it's just the vibrations and time.

I have bought steering compressor tool from Jeff (Midwest trikke). Owner's manual recommends just a few good whacks with rubber mallet. I remember having seen a video that used a pipe and gravity for the purpose.

Search for "steering column compression" on the forums. You'll get a lot of good hits.
Good judgement comes from experience. The experience usually comes from bad judgement.

Thanks. I discovered that a few whacks with a heavy boot with ski head mounted and loosened ring works wonders. It isn't in my manual btw, but I have an old model so the manual probably has been upgraded as well.
